Similar & Different – This flagship project aims to introduce Afrikaans-speaking pupils to the language and culture of the Netherlands. Learners from Grade 6 to 11 at a variety of schools will learn about city life, food, role models, leisure and more in the Flemish part of Belgium and in the Netherlands. The interactive and innovative format of the lessons – which will eventually also be available in digital format – is already enjoying international attention. The lessons are aligned with the national curriculum.
If you’re in need of cultural stimulation provided by experts, our podium discussions should tickle your intellect (OR fire up your synapses) – whether in English, Dutch or Afrikaans.
If you’re in need of cultural stimulation provided by a range of experts, the podium discussions at SASNEV should tickle your intellect (OR fire up your synapses) – whether it is in English, Dutch or Afrikaans. Countless visitors regularly arrive to take part in book launches or cultural discussions presented throughout the year by writers, academics and scientists from South Africa, the Netherlands and Flanders. As an active and dynamic cultural center, SASNEV is the natural base for inspired speakers, artists and exhibitors to present fresh and challenging ideas and spark discussions about matters literary, cultural, artistic or from the socio-political terrain. See our Calendar or Facebook page for the program and details.
In March 2017, Stefan Hermans, one of Flander’s contemporary writers and writer of the (award winning) book War and Turpentine, visited South Africa.
In March 2017, Stefan Hertmans, one of Flanders’s greatest contemporary writers, visited South Africa. The book tour allows authors to take a tour to or through South Africa to introduce their work. Especially reading clubs, but also other public, are exposed to Dutch and Afrikaans literature. Where and when possible, workshops are held, and lectures and meetings are organised. In 2017 SASNEV joined forces with the University of Stellenbosch’s annual Woordfees. The SASNEV book tour is growing bigger each year and enhances friendships between the Dutch, Flemish and South African publishers, writers, readers and individuals. This has led to mutual visits, increased (especially via internet) communication; more books are translated opening new worlds to readers and especially have resulted in a renewed joint positive cultural interest over continents. Three major South African publishers are already involved in this project: Protea Boekhuis, Lapa Publishers and NB Publishers.
SASNEV is located at 4 Central Square, Pinelands, Cape Town, 7405, South Africa.
